Tesla HW4 may soon be outdated as HW4 Plus with double memory unveiled
Tesla is preparing an upgraded successor to its HW4 self-driving computer, dubbed HW4 Plus. Elon Musk (일론 머스크) said on a quarterly earnings call that a new AI4.1 or AI4 Plus chip will double memory, raising RAM per chip to 32 GB and total system memory to 64 GB. He also acknowledged HW3 struggles with unsupervised FSD, citing memory bandwidth as a key bottleneck.

Tesla delays \'unsupervised FSD\' again, acknowledges HW3 vehicles cannot support it
Tesla has officially acknowledged that existing Hardware 3 vehicles cannot deliver unsupervised full self-driving (FSD), raising questions over its autonomous driving strategy and customer compensation. Elon Musk said HW3 lacks the capability due to memory bandwidth far below HW4. With about 4 million HW3 cars on the road, Tesla is promoting moves to HW4 via discounted trade-ins and hardware replacements, while considering microfactories for retrofits. Musk also delayed consumer unsupervised FSD to 2026 Q4.

Tesla FSD: perceived gap widens between HW3 and HW4 as automation improves
An analysis says Tesla’s supervised Full Self-Driving driver-assistance system is showing a widening perceived performance gap by hardware generation. Cleantechnica compared an older HW3-based Model 3 with a newer HW4-based vehicle. It said HW3 has improved over years of updates but still struggles with garage entry and exit, parking and some lane choices. HW4 supports FSD V14 and was rated as more fully automated in many situations.
