Musk says HW3 upgrades needed as Tesla still mulls FSD plan
Tesla has yet to present a concrete execution plan for supporting Full Self-Driving (FSD) on Hardware 3 (HW3) vehicles. CEO Elon Musk acknowledged the need to upgrade HW3 vehicles but did not give clear answers on timing, methods or how much of the cost Tesla would bear. He said it makes sense to upgrade vehicles below HW4 and is considering options including next-generation AI boards, while chip production and priorities could delay HW3 support.

Tesla 2026 Model Y test drive: Without FSD, steering assist is also removed
Tesla’s 2026 Model 3 and Model Y further expand screen-based controls and remove steering assist unless drivers subscribe to Full Self-Driving (FSD), according to a user cited by Cleantechnica. The user highlighted new on-screen gear shifting as a major inconvenience, though some steering-wheel controls were seen as improved. The report also noted trim-based differences in seat controls, concerns over paid driver-assistance features, and a widening gap between older hardware and newer FSD versions.

Tesla rolls out FSD v14 Lite for HW3, still without unsupervised self-driving
Tesla has begun rolling out Full Self-Driving (FSD) v14 Lite for HW3 vehicles, marking the first large-scale update for about 4 million cars stuck on FSD v12.6 since early 2025. The update is initially for early-access users and aims to bring v14 driving behavior to HW3 hardware. Tesla and executives say safety and several functions have improved, but it remains a supervised Level 2 driver-assistance system and does not enable unsupervised self-driving.
