He called Optimus a highly complex problem that no one has yet achieved. Musk said the robot must meet standards for dexterity, reliability, durability and safety to approach human capability, and singled out hand function as a key hurdle.

Elon Musk said Tesla should more aggressively increase investment in AI-related facilities and keep the pace even if some funds are used inefficiently. Tesla’s second-quarter capital spending rose 142 percent from a year earlier to $5.8 billion, and its free cash flow posted a $1.1 billion deficit. Management said AI-related spending will rise further, with full-year capital spending expected to exceed $25 billion.
