Cable TV broadcasting fund burden equals 168 percent of operating profit; Kim Jong-cheol says reform urgent

Cable TV operators facing business difficulties are paying broadcasting and telecommunications development fund levies equal to 168 percent of operating profit, a lawmaker said. Lee Yeon-hee raised the issue with Kim Jong-cheol at a parliamentary audit, arguing rules exempt some broadcasters from payments when they post net losses but exclude cable TV operators. Kim said media laws have missed chances to keep pace and called for an integrated media law.

Broadcast Media Communications Commission approves nominations, appointments of six directors for KBS, BCJ and EBS

South Korea\'s Broadcast Media Communications Commission approved nominations and appointments for six directors at public broadcasters KBS, the Broadcast Culture Promotion Association and EBS. It nominated two KBS directors to the president and appointed two directors each for BCJ and EBS, with appointments effective Oct. 19. All six were recommended by the People Power Party. The commission held the meeting behind closed doors and urged remaining nominating bodies to make recommendations.

KBS posts 21.584 percent audience share last year, top among terrestrial broadcasters

KBS recorded the highest audience share among domestic broadcasters last year at 21.584 percent, up 0.722 percentage points from a year earlier. The Broadcasting and Media Communications Commission released its 2025 audience share calculation for 290 broadcasters operating 423 channels with annual viewing records. Among general programming channels, TV Chosun led with 6.997 percent. YTN and Yonhap News TV posted gains, while CJ ENM fell and KT Skylife rose.
