South Korea's Broadcast Media Communications Commission voted to nominate and appoint 6 public broadcaster directors recommended by the People Power Party.

The commission held its 42nd plenary meeting on Wednesday and approved agenda items to nominate 2 directors for the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) and to appoint 2 directors each for the Broadcast Culture Promotion Association and the Korea Educational Broadcasting System (EBS), it said.

Lee Kang-deok (이강덕), chairman of the Kwanhun Club Jeongsinyeonggi Fund, and Jang Han-sik (장한식), former president of KBS Business, were recommended as KBS directors. The commission nominated them to the president for appointment.

Oh Jeong-hwan (오정환), former co-representative of the People’s Solidarity for Fair Media, and Jeong Jae-wook (정재욱), a lawyer at Taewon Law Firm, were appointed as Broadcast Culture Promotion Association directors. Park Ki-wan (박기완), former head of KBS Wonju Broadcasting Station, and Cho Han-je (조한제), former standing auditor at BEXCO, were appointed as EBS directors. The appointment date is Oct. 19.

All 6 directors nominated or appointed are People Power Party recommendations, it said, referring to the party as a parliamentary negotiating group.

The commission held the meeting behind closed doors, citing the personnel agenda. During the meeting, it again urged the KBS viewer committee and the group representing a majority of KBS employees, which have yet to complete their recommendations among the nominating bodies under the revised three broadcasting laws, to make recommendations promptly.

The KBS viewer committee is currently allocated 2 nominations, while the group representing a majority of KBS employees is allocated 3 nominations.

The commission plans to quickly complete the nomination and appointment procedures for public broadcaster directors in line with the intent of the revised three broadcasting laws.

The meeting also approved an agenda item to appoint an EBS auditor. The commission appointed Kim Jang-hwan (김장환), former head of KBS Daegu Broadcasting Headquarters, as auditor effective Oct. 19, following a nomination by the EBS board.

Under the revised Korea Educational Broadcasting System Act enacted in September last year, the procedure for appointing an EBS auditor was changed from direct appointment by the Korea Communications Commission to appointment by the Broadcast Media Communications Commission following a nomination by the EBS board.
