South Korea's Broadcasting Media and Communications Commission and the Korea Radio Promotion Association (RAPA) selected 8 programs from 8 broadcasters for the 2026 local broadcasting AI production demonstration support initiative, it said on Thursday.

The selected works include JeonjuMBC's historical documentary "Strangers in Jeonju: A Secret From 130 Years Ago", MBC Chungbuk's live cooking show "The 28th Chungcheongbuk-do Food Culture Festa", and KBS Chuncheon's local talk show "Potato Talk".

The project provides AI production technology training to local broadcasters that face difficulties introducing new technologies due to a lack of budget and production staff. It also supports applying the skills learned in training to actual programme production.

The commission and RAPA conducted AI production training this year for local broadcasters in 7 regions nationwide, including Daejeon-Chungcheong, North Jeolla and Gangwon, following Busan-Gyeongnam, Daegu-Gyeongbuk, Gwangju-Jeonnam and Jeju last year.

The selected broadcasters plan to apply generative AI-based video, audio and subtitle production, as well as AI-based automatic filming, screen reconfiguration and highlight extraction technologies, to programme planning, filming and editing.

Cheon Ji-hyeon (천지현), director general of the commission's Broadcasting Media Promotion Bureau, said it would support raising production efficiency and content competitiveness in local broadcasting using AI technology and ensure strong content reflecting local characteristics is produced continuously.
