The Broadcast Media Communications Commission said it held a "broadcast media AI developer meeting" on Sept. 17 at GeminiSoft, which is carrying out a government R&D project in the broadcast media AI field, together with the Institute of Information and Communications Technology Planning and Evaluation (IITP).

About 20 people attended, including Chairman Kim Jong-cheol (김종철) as well as officials from broadcasters such as SBS, KBS and MBC Chungbuk, and research institutes including the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), and the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI).

Participants discussed technologies that allow non-experts to search, generate and edit desired video by conversing with AI, as well as technologies that analyse users' viewing history and content context to recommend and generate content suited to individuals.

Researchers conveyed views that securing data and computing resources and running demonstrations using broadcasters and platforms are needed to apply R&D results in broadcasting and commercialise them.

Kim said, "We will reflect the views of researchers and companies raised in the field in R&D policy and support developed technologies so they can lead to on-site application and commercialisation."

The commission is promoting a 72.7 billion won "Digital Media Innovation Technology Development" programme from this year through 2030. Its goal is to develop technologies related to AI-based production of broadcast media content and personalised services and apply them in broadcasting and platform settings.
