The Broadcasting Media Communication Commission said on Thursday it held the 2026 International Broadcast Co-production Conference (IBCC) in Seoul under the theme, "One Story, Borderless Screen: Cross-Border Cooperation in the Glocal Era."

The event, launched in 2016 to promote cross-country broadcast co-productions and exchanges among domestic and overseas broadcast and media industry figures, marked its 11th edition this year. About 200 people attended, including representatives from broadcasters and production companies in and outside South Korea, related institutions and academia.

Participants shared international co-production cases and discussed the use of new production technologies such as AI and storytelling approaches aimed at global viewers.

The event also presented awards for 2 outstanding co-productions. The grand prize went to Studio Janchi's "Ed & Ryu: Mad About Seafood," co-produced with Britain, and the top excellence award went to KBS's "ASEAN-Korea Music Festival," co-produced with Malaysia and the Philippines.

Kim Jong-cheol (김종철), chairman of the commission, said that if broadcasters and producers from each country join forces from planning through production and distribution, they can share costs and risks, build on each other's strengths and challenge broader markets. He said the commission will support efforts to expand co-productions by widening the conclusion of broadcast co-production agreements and through projects to build broadcast video data, among other steps.

Ahead of the event, Kim met Philomena Gnanapragasam, secretary general of the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD), and signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen cooperation between the two organisations and ensure the successful hosting of the Asia Media Summit (AMS) in South Korea in September next year.
