The Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) said on July 23 it held the 'Third Joint Workshop on Standardisation of Next-Generation Broadcast Technology' on July 22 at the Korea Science and Technology Center.

Co-hosted with the National Radio Research Agency (RRA), the TTA Broadcast Technology Committee, the Future Broadcasting Media Standard Forum and the ITU-R Broadcasting Service Study Group under the Korea ITU Research Committee, the workshop reviewed development directions for broadcast technology in the AI era and discussed international standardisation strategies and cooperation plans for next-generation broadcast services.

About 70 participants from industry, academia, research institutes and government attended, including the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Korea Communications Commission, the National Radio Research Agency, KBS, MBC, SBS, the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and Naver Cloud.

The Ministry of Science and ICT introduced broadcast technology policy for the AI era under the theme of 'Policy directions for promoting AI-based digital media innovation technology development'. ETRI, KBS, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics presented broadcast production and service technologies using generative AI.

Participants also presented a 'Beyond TV' vision to expand screen-centric broadcasting into an intelligent lifestyle platform. They discussed the status of an integrated radio platform being pursued with the goal of a pilot service in October, and ways to expand 'physical broadcast' technology combining physical AI and ultra-precise location data broadcasting into autonomous driving and drones.

In the international standardisation field, participants shared trends in Brazil's 'TV 3.0', which adopted ATSC 3.0 technology. They agreed to strengthen overseas expansion by domestic broadcasting companies and international standard cooperation as ATSC 3.0 adoption expands in Brazil following South Korea and the United States.

TTA Chairman Seung-hyun Son (손승현) said the workshop was an occasion to explore together the future of next-generation broadcast technology at a turning point where advanced technologies such as generative AI are merging with the broadcasting and media industry. He said TTA would expand a venue for standardisation cooperation involving industry, academia, research institutes and government.
