Global smartphone shipments fall 20 percent; Samsung holds top spot
Global smartphone shipments fell 20 percent in the third quarter from a year earlier to 254.7 million units, the lowest third-quarter level since 2013, as higher component costs and rising handset prices dampened demand, particularly in emerging markets. Samsung Electronics shipped 57.8 million units to remain the top vendor, while Apple shipped 56.5 million units, narrowing the gap. China vendors posted steeper declines. Omdia expects full-year shipments to fall 12 percent.

Ford Escape discontinued; could it return as an electric vehicle?
Ford has ended production of its compact SUV Escape, drawing attention to whether the nameplate could return as a battery-electric model. Ford’s U.S. website says the Escape is “taking a break,” wording that does not explicitly confirm permanent discontinuation. Production of the Escape and Lincoln Corsair ended at a Kentucky plant that is being converted for next-generation EVs. Analysts link the possibility to Ford’s new universal EV platform plans, but the outlook remains uncertain.

Liner to hold AI agent hackathon for people aged 40 and older
Global AI agent startup Liner will hold an AI agent implementation hackathon for people aged 40 and older. Liner said on Sunday it will recruit participants for the “.EXE-THON 2026” through Nov. 11. The event is a public-private cooperation program linked to the Ministry of Science and ICT’s national AI contest. Up to 200 teams can apply online. Winners will receive awards and cash prizes of 5 million won, 3 million won and 1 million won.
