Will the 2030s bring a lunar colony era? Radiation and low gravity are key variables
Private space companies are increasingly setting lunar habitation as a realistic goal, but human and environmental risks that could block long-term stays are also coming into focus. A Voyager Technologies executive expects people to reach the moon in the late 2020s and for early 2030s living and work to become possible with life-support bases. Investment in low Earth orbit is rising and space data centres are being discussed, while radiation and low gravity are highlighted as key threats requiring exercise, nutrition and shielding.

Race for Moon south pole heats up as Blue Origin and China\'s Chang\'e 7 target Shackleton crater
The United States and China are stepping up competition to explore the Moon’s south pole near Shackleton crater. Blue Origin’s Endurance lander and China’s Chang’e 7 mission are expected to launch around the same time in the second half of this year and attempt to land near the crater rim. The site is seen as promising for water ice in permanently shadowed areas and near-continuous sunlight on the rim for solar power.

Kepler starts full-scale operation of largest orbital computing cluster
Canadian space communications company Kepler Communications has moved to expand the space data processing market by operating what it describes as the largest computing cluster currently in orbit. Kepler equipped 10 satellites launched in January with about 40 Nvidia Orin edge processors and connected them via laser communication links. Kepler has 18 customers and recently added space software startup Sofia Space, which plans to run its operating system on Kepler’s network in space.
