Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos (제프 베조스), is pushing to build a space data center network made up of more than 50,000 satellites, TechCrunch reported on March 20.

To do so, Blue Origin has asked the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for approval. It aims to reduce the energy burden of ground-based data centres and process computing directly in space.

Blue Origin plans to support data-satellite communications through a separate satellite network called Terrawave.

Space data centres can boost sustainability by using solar power and can avoid regulations on Earth. SpaceX, Starcloud and Google are also pursuing similar projects, and SpaceX in particular has submitted to the FCC a plan to use 1,000,000 satellites, while Starcloud filed a plan to use 60,000 satellites.

But there are also significant economic feasibility and technical challenges. Processor cooling, powerful laser communications and chip performance in high-radiation environments must be addressed, and launch costs are also an important variable, TechCrunch reported.
