Payments shift to mobile as consumers stop taking out physical cards

Payments made without presenting physical cards rose 10.6 percent in the first half of 2026 from a year earlier, as card spending increasingly shifted to mobile devices, Bank of Korea data showed. Total payment card use averaged 3.78 trillion won a day, up 7.6 percent. Non-card-present payments averaged 1.79 trillion won, outpacing growth in card-present payments. Easy-pay services accounted for 52.6 percent of non-card-present payments, and fintech providers held a 72.0 percent share of card easy-pay use.

Samsung Electronics starts domestic One UI 9 update, adds personalised AI and stronger security

Samsung Electronics will begin rolling out its One UI 9 update in South Korea from Sept. 16 for the Galaxy S26 series and expand it sequentially to global markets and supported devices. The software adds features including My FanCam for automatic subject tracking in videos and a new Warranty and Care menu. It also enhances personalisation, improves Galaxy AI tools such as Interpreter and Creative Studio, and expands security and anti-scam functions.

South Korea IPTV broadcasters to use 18 million set-top boxes to measure TV viewing

The Korea IPTV Broadcasting Association plans to expand use of the TV Index, which analyses viewing data from about 18 million home set-top boxes of KT, SK Broadband and LG Uplus. The group said existing ratings surveys estimate viewing based on about 4,000 households, leaving many channels recorded at 0 percent. It said TV Index can show absolute figures such as reach and viewing time, and may later be expanded to link set-top boxes and mobile devices for broader ad performance analysis.
