[DigitalToday reporter Jinju Hong] Camera and battery specifications for Samsung Electronics' next foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Flip8, Z Fold8 and Z Fold8 Ultra, have leaked ahead of an official unveiling. While the scope of change differs by model, the biggest hardware improvements appear to be concentrated on the Z Fold8 Ultra, the report said.

On July 17 local time, IT outlet Engadget reported that well-known leaker Evan Blass (에반 블라스) released detailed specifications and product images for three of Samsung Electronics' next foldable phones.

The most striking point in the leak is the upgrade direction by model. The Galaxy Z Flip8 remains at the same level as the previous model for both camera and battery, while the Z Fold8 appears to have opted for a new form factor and design changes. The Z Fold8 Ultra is expected to emerge as a higher-end model that keeps the existing Fold-series shape while boosting camera and battery performance.

The Galaxy Z Flip8 is said to carry a 50-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera and a 10-megapixel front camera. By resolution, it has the same setup as the previous Flip7. It was not confirmed whether the image sensor or lens performance has improved.

Its battery capacity is also reported at 4,300 mAh, the same as the Flip7. An exterior change appears to be the addition of a new rose pink color. Citing the Flip8's camera and battery specifications being the same as the previous model, Engadget said demands for camera improvements raised since last year may again not have been sufficiently reflected.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 is leaked to have a 50-megapixel main camera with 2x optical zoom, a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera and a 10-megapixel front camera. The chipset is said to be Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite, which was also used in the previous Fold7.

While the battery capacity was not disclosed, maximum video playback time was listed at 26 hours. Leaked images showed a pastel-toned purple variant, and when folded it appeared closer to a square shape than typical vertical foldable phones. Engadget assessed this as showing the Z Fold8 is a model that demonstrates Samsung Electronics' new hardware approach.

The biggest changes were concentrated in the Z Fold8 Ultra. The model was introduced as keeping a form similar to the existing Fold series while strengthening rear-camera and battery performance.

It is said to feature a 200-megapixel main camera, a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera supporting 3x optical zoom on the rear. The front camera is 10 megapixels. The battery capacity is 5,000 mAh, with maximum video playback time listed at 27 hours.

The previous Z Fold7 carried a 200-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera. If the leaked information is correct, the Z Fold8 Ultra keeps the main and telephoto cameras while sharply raising the ultrawide camera from 12 megapixels to 50 megapixels.

By contrast, the Flip8 is said to have the same camera and battery capacity as the previous model, and the Z Fold8 is also said to use the same chipset as the previous model, suggesting performance improvements may be limited. As a result, Samsung's foldable strategy this year appears to focus on form factor changes and lineup segmentation rather than across-the-board specification upgrades.

Samsung Electronics is set to officially unveil its next mobile devices at an Unpacked event on July 22. In the actual announcement, camera sensors and lenses, battery efficiency, charging performance, and pricing and positioning by model are expected to be key points to watch.

Engadget assessed the specifications leaked so far as being overall close to “same specs, different day.” It added that the Z Fold8 Ultra, based on camera and battery improvements, could be the model showing the clearest upgrade among Samsung's foldables this year.
