Will iPhone 17 prices fall when iPhone 18 launches? Apple\'s changed calculus
New iPhone launches typically lead to price cuts for older models, but that pattern may break this year due to a changed release schedule and rising component costs. Analysts say the base iPhone 18 may not launch this year, which could delay any iPhone 17 price reduction. Higher memory prices could also keep iPhone 17 prices steady. Price cuts, discontinuations and retailer discounts remain possible depending on launch timing.

Memory prices quadruple; iPhone 18 Pro prices seen rising up to 20 percent
Apple may raise prices of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, due to be unveiled on Sept. 9, by up to 20 percent, as memory costs surge amid tightening supply tied to expanding AI data centres. TrendForce estimated memory costs for the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro could rise about 400 percent year on year, pushing overall component costs higher. TrendForce also flagged possible increases for non-Pro models and projected a high starting price for a first foldable iPhone.

Google reuses DDR4 from retired servers for AI equipment amid memory shortage
Google is reusing older DDR4 memory recovered from decommissioned servers in newer AI equipment as a worsening supply crunch hits memory chips, driven by the spread of AI data centres. Google said it remains hard to secure enough chips and called faster capacity expansion by manufacturers the most sustainable solution. Meta and others are also extending older memory use via CXL, though performance limits remain. Researchers and companies forecast further price rises and prolonged shortages.
