Kakao Games restarts M&A with Metoon acquisition

Kakao Games, which has been selling non-core affiliates and stakes, has put mergers and acquisitions back at the centre of its growth strategy under new management. The company decided on Sept. 15 to spend about 98 billion won to acquire 39.56% of Metoon through a combination of secondary share purchases and a third-party share issue. Kakao Games will become Metoon’s largest shareholder and gain management control once the deal closes. It has also signalled further investment.

HTML5 games spread on KakaoTalk, Toss and OneStore without installation

HTML5-based games that run directly inside platforms such as KakaoTalk, Toss, Kakao Pay and OneStore are spreading in South Korea, removing the need to install separate apps from Google Play or Apple’s App Store. Game companies are using the format to lower entry barriers and reuse existing titles, while platforms expand mini-game offerings through in-app ecosystems. The market remains at an early stage, with sustainability of usage and revenue seen as the key.

Neptune teams up with LINE Games to launch five H5 titles in Japan

Neptune will partner with LINE Games, a unit of LY Corp, to sequentially launch five H5 (HTML5) games on Japan\'s LINE Mini App, it said on Sept. 16. The lineup includes Cat Office, Cat Snack Bar, Dduddudrill, Infinite Stairs and Urruru Mercenaries. Three titles will be demoed at the Tokyo Game Show 2026 LINE Games booth. The partnership enables in-app purchases and LINE login, with local marketing support.
