AI boom pushes RAM prices back to 20 years ago; DDR4 up nearly tenfold in two years
PC memory prices are rising sharply as surging demand for high-bandwidth memory used in AI data centres squeezes overall memory production capacity and lifts consumer DRAM prices. DDR4 prices rose from about $0.9 per GB in 2024 to $8.41 in July 2026, while DDR5 climbed from about $2.2 per GB in July 2025 to $11.4 in July 2026. The figures reflect consumer-market low prices rather than contract or average selling prices.

Apple eyes CXMT but capacity already near full, raising doubts over memory talks
Apple is approaching Chinese memory maker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), but analysts say CXMT’s position has changed and may limit any impact on prices or supply control. ITmedia reported CXMT’s monthly DRAM wafer output exceeded 100,000 in 2024, with existing plants operating close to maximum. The company’s output rose steadily from 2019 and reached 1.62 million wafers in 2024, lifting it to No. 4 globally with about 5 percent share.

Neocloud market shifts as SoftBank and Meta enter
The neocloud market for AI-focused cloud computing is shifting as major players enter. SoftBank Group and its telecom unit SoftBank plan to start a neocloud business next fiscal year, renting AI computing resources to U.S. companies. Meta is also stepping up plans to use its data centres for cloud services. Nvidia is expanding support for smaller cloud firms that lease its GPUs. Big cloud companies are also building forward deployed engineer teams for enterprise AI.
