China EV rollout cuts PM2.5 by 23 percent, may have prevented 262,000 early deaths

A study found China’s expanded use of electric vehicles may have reduced exposure to air pollution and prevented up to 262,000 premature deaths. Researchers said broader EV adoption cut emissions of harmful pollutants such as PM2.5 and nitrogen oxides, improving public health. Using satellite observations, they estimated carbon monoxide fell about 30 percent and PM2.5 about 23 percent versus a scenario without EV expansion. Benefits were stronger in cities than in rural areas and smaller towns.
