Post office launches pilot bank agency service for loan consultations in rural areas without bank branches

Korea Post has begun a pilot bank agency service to improve access to financial services in underserved areas. Korea Post chief Park In-hwan (박인환) visited the Cheongyang Post Office in South Chungcheong Province to inspect operations. The service allows residents in county-level areas without commercial bank branches to consult on and apply for bank loan products at head post offices. The pilot covers 20 post offices nationwide and offers consultations for eight products from four major banks.

240 trillion won to flow into Chungcheong as Samsung and SK roll out investment plans

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix on Wednesday announced large investment plans for South Korea’s Chungcheong region, totalling 240 trillion won. Samsung said it will invest about 140 trillion won in areas including advanced displays, high-bandwidth memory fabs, next-generation batteries and AI server package substrates, aiming to create 250,000 jobs. SK Hynix said it will invest 100 trillion won in Cheongju, citing a need to expand NAND supply and strengthen advanced packaging.

Samsung, SK consider semiconductor cluster in Gwangju, South Jeolla with up to 400 trillion won investment

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are reviewing plans to build a large-scale semiconductor production base in South Korea’s Honam region, with a combined investment discussed at 300 trillion to 400 trillion won. The plan being coordinated targets new facilities in Gwangju and South Jeolla, spanning memory front-end processes, advanced packaging back-end processes and AI data centers. A law to support designated semiconductor clusters is set to take effect in August.
