Broadcast Media Telecommunications Commission moves to build K-FAST ecosystem to open 47 trillion won overseas market
South Korea\'s Broadcast Media Telecommunications Commission is moving to build an advertising-supported free streaming TV (FAST) ecosystem, saying the media industry needs to develop strategies around global distribution platforms such as FAST as advertising revenue declines. At a corporate meeting in Suwon on June 4, the commission heard views from platform operators, broadcasters, channel operators and technology firms. The global FAST market is forecast to grow to 47 trillion won by 2030 from 18 trillion won in 2025.

Why FAST is more than \'free TV\'
FAST, short for Free Ad-Supported Streaming TV, is gaining attention as viewers tire of paying for multiple OTT subscriptions. Unlike on-demand services, FAST runs like traditional TV channels but is delivered over the internet and funded by advertising. Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are expanding their services to boost device appeal, ad sales and viewing data. The government is also promoting K-FAST with AI dubbing to distribute K-content abroad.
