Institutional bitcoin demand may hinge on loans and collateral use

Institutional investors\' future demand for bitcoin could be driven by financial uses such as lending, collateral and corporate treasury management, an analysis said. Cointelegraph reported that bitcoin infrastructure developer RootstockLabs said bitcoin\'s role could expand beyond a store of value. RootstockLabs estimated 1.5 percent of supply is used in lending and bitcoin-based finance and put identifiable institutional holdings at about 3.9 million BTC. It also cited risks including defaults, custody failures and volatility.

A warning has been raised that European policies meant to protect the auto industry could weaken competitiveness in electric vehicles. As China’s battery and EV sector grows rapidly, critics say loosening rules on internal combustion engines could delay Europe’s technology transition. T&E secretary-general William Todts criticised a Franco-German proposal that maintains a 2035 emissions cut target but would drop a separate offset requirement, allow exceptions for synthetic and biofuels and promote EU-made parts.

Hedge funds sell, sovereign wealth funds buy as bitcoin ETF holdings reshaped

Institutional selling of spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds during a bitcoin downturn was concentrated among a small number of hedge funds and banks, according to an analysis of 13F filings. Total holdings by 13F filers fell about 14 percent from end-September 2025 to end-June 2026, while others increased holdings. Morgan Stanley’s wealth unit and Abu Dhabi investors were among buyers. Galaxy said reduced arbitrage profitability drove selling as the futures basis narrowed.
