Korea ITU research committee holds workshop on standardisation achievements
South Korea’s National Radio Research Agency under the Ministry of Science and ICT held a workshop on Sept. 18 at the Telecommunications Technology Association, attended by about 200 ITU international standardisation experts. Discussions covered 6G mobile communications and satellite IMT-2030 trends in ITU-R, and standardisation achievements in physical AI security and AIoT in ITU-T. Participants also shared ITU-D cases supporting developing countries and research on cybersecurity policy and best practices.

The world of undersea cables for subsea communications
A vast communications network runs beneath the ocean, carrying most international data through undersea cables. Despite advances in satellite communications, the ITU says more than 99 percent of global cross-border data flows through subsea systems. The cables transmit data as light through optical fibre, boosted by repeaters powered through conductors in the cable. Landing stations link subsea networks to domestic backbones. In South Korea, operators such as SK Broadband are expanding subsea links as AI data centres spread.

Lee Jae-myung pledges to reform outdated rules to boost broadcasting competitiveness
President Lee Jae-myung (이재명) said he will rationally reform regulations that no longer fit the times to strengthen the competitiveness of the broadcasting industry. In a congratulatory address read out at a Broadcasting Day event in Seoul, he praised broadcasters for driving K-content to the world’s centre and pledged to support autonomy and independence and build a “basic media society” guaranteeing participation, access and choice. Industry and parliamentary leaders also called for support.
