KT took part in international standardisation discussions on AI security and digital trust at an International Telecommunication Union (ITU) standards meeting.

KT attended the 'ITU-T SG17' international standards meeting held in Chongqing, China, from Sept. 7 to 11 and proposed guidelines for developing cybersecurity-focused AI models as a new international standard work item, the company said on Sunday.

ITU-T SG17 is a study group in which experts from governments, companies and research institutions worldwide develop international standards in cybersecurity, security architecture, personal information protection and AI security. Chang-oh Kim (김창오), an executive director and chief privacy officer at KT who heads the personal information protection group within the information security office, led standardisation discussions in AI cybersecurity and digital trust as chairman of WP3. Heung-yeol Yum (염흥열), chairman of KT's personal information protection advisory committee and former chairman of ITU-T SG17 from 2016 to 2024, also participated in developing international standards.

KT proposed guidelines on standards for developing AI models specialised in cybersecurity as the use of generative AI and foundation models expands. The proposal includes cybersecurity knowledge sources and datasets for AI model development, technical considerations for developing cybersecurity-specialised models, criteria for evaluating the model development lifecycle and recommended practices for improving models.

KT also took part in standardisation work in the digital trust field. SG17 is developing a technical report that defines 'trust' and 'trustworthiness' in communications and ICT environments and sets out components and requirements for a 'trust framework' to apply them to systems and services. KT proposed amendments to supplement key term definitions and the trust framework components and requirements in the technical report. The amendments were reflected in the final report with support from countries including Britain and India.

Chang-oh Kim said, "Based on KT's experience in communications and ICT, information security and personal information protection, we will continue to contribute to global standardisation in AI security, personal information protection and trust."
