Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) said on Thursday that Kim Dae-jung (김대중), head of its Standardization Headquarters, was elected chair for 2027 of the Project Coordination Group (PCG), the top coordination committee of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).
3GPP is an international mobile communications standardisation partnership project jointly established in December 1998 by standardisation bodies including TTA in the United States, Europe, China and Japan. It has developed global technical specifications ranging from third-generation mobile communications to LTE and 5G, and is currently pursuing 6G technology research.
The PCG is 3GPP's top decision-making body. It manages the scope and work procedures of 3GPP standardisation activities and gives final approval to standardisation items of the Technical Specification Group. It is also responsible for cooperation with external organisations such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
Kim has served as a 3GPP head delegate since 2024, supporting standardisation activities by South Korean companies. He expanded cooperation with overseas standardisation bodies in the United States, Europe, Japan, China and India, and took part in efforts to prevent technology fragmentation through single standardisation for 6G.
He has also strengthened cooperation so that the views of domestic member companies can be reflected on policy issues, including improving the efficiency of 3GPP organisational operations and legal issues related to datasets used in AI-based communications standards.
Son Seung-hyun (손승현), chairman of TTA, said, "It is very encouraging to take on the chairmanship of the 3GPP top committee in 2027, at an important time when full-fledged standard development for 6G technology is becoming visible." He added, "We will do our part so our industry can actively lead 6G standardisation."
