Samsung to build 240 billion won HVAC production line in Gwangju, to start operations in early 2028
Samsung Electronics will build an HVAC production line for AI data centre air-conditioning equipment at its Gwangju complex. Samsung Electronics, FlaktGroup Korea and the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special Zone signed an investment agreement on Aug. 19. Samsung plans to invest about 240 billion won to construct a 21,800 square metre production line at its third campus in Buk-gu, Gwangju, with operations set to begin in early 2028.

Mobile carriers shift CAPEX focus from networks to AI data centres
South Korea’s three mobile carriers are shifting capital spending away from base stations and other traditional networks toward AI infrastructure as 5G rollout stabilises and demand for AI data centres rises. SK Telecom and KT cut network-focused CAPEX in the first half, while LG Uplus increased spending tied to its Paju AI data centre. The companies are rolling out expansion plans and reporting rising AI data centre revenue, while maintaining some network investment for 5G standalone and future 6G preparation.

Alibaba Cloud launches third data centre in South Korea to target enterprise agentic AI market
Alibaba Cloud said on Aug. 18 it has officially opened its third data centre in South Korea as it targets the AI market. The company said it will continue long-term investment in Korea, which it views as a key AI and digital market in Asia. It plans to strengthen local infrastructure and support stable operations of AI and cloud-based services. Alibaba Cloud also plans to expand agent-based AI services for growing enterprise demand.
