SKT refuses Korea consumer agency's 2.3 trillion won compensation plan

SK Telecom has declined to accept a mediation proposal by the Korea Consumer Agency's Consumer Dispute Mediation Commission over a personal data leak. Industry sources said the company notified the agency of its refusal on Friday, ending the mediation and leaving applicants to pursue separate civil lawsuits. The commission had approved compensation for 58 applicants including a 50,000 won fee discount and 50,000 T Plus points. Total compensation was estimated at 2.3 trillion won.

Hana Financial enters 4 trillion won club; Ham says next bet is stablecoins and AI

Hana Financial Group entered the 4 trillion won club for the first time after posting annual net profit of 4.029 trillion won last year. Chairman Ham Young-joo said the group has focused on strengthening fundamentals through profitability-led growth over the past four years. He highlighted capital soundness and higher shareholder returns, including a 47 percent payout ratio in 2025, and said stablecoins and AI will drive new growth.

MSIT announces new projects for first-half nano and materials R&D program

South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT on Jan. 30 announced its 2026 plan to select new projects under its nano and materials technology development program. The program's budget is 268.4 billion won, up 6.4 percent from a year earlier. The ministry will provide 23.6 billion won for 21 project calls in the first-half notice and will issue a separate notice in April for projects starting in the second half.
