GM aims to cut vehicle development time to 2 years, unveils central computer and AI strategy

General Motors plans to use artificial intelligence to cut vehicle development time from 4 to 5 years to 2 years and overhaul batteries, vehicle electronics and autonomous driving technology. At a New York event, it unveiled an EV, AI and self-driving strategy aimed at responding to competition from Chinese automakers. GM plans to adopt a central computing software platform, introduce LMR batteries, and roll out a centralized vehicle computing unit starting in 2028.

GM, LG Energy Solution push mass production of next-generation battery

General Motors and LG Energy Solution are moving to produce next-generation batteries in the United States with higher energy density than existing low-cost batteries. Their joint venture Ultium Cells plans to retrofit its Spring Hill, Tennessee, plant to make lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic battery cells. GM targets a 33 percent increase in energy density at costs similar to lithium iron phosphate (LFP). The retrofit is set to start late this year and finish in 2028.

Boring Company unveils \'Liner Truck\' using Model 3 drivetrain to haul containers in tunnels

Elon Musk-led Boring Company showed remote-controlled freight-handling equipment using Tesla Model 3 battery packs and drive units to move a standard shipping container inside a tunnel. The company is seeking to electrify and automate internal logistics for heavy loads in narrow tunnels, though the extremely tight clearance raises questions about stable remote control. The Liner Truck can carry up to 22,000 pounds but has limited speed and range under load.
