South Korea leads revision of SAE J3016 autonomous driving standard, clarifies six-level criteria

South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute said on Oct. 29 that a South Korean research team led revisions to SAE J3016, the international standard defining six levels of driving automation. The update clarifies each level based on the roles of the driver and vehicle, aiming to reduce confusion between driver-assist functions and full self-driving. The SAE J3016 2026 revision was officially published on Sept. 20.

Tesla overhauls Cybercab battery design, uses 4680 modules and weighs LFP switch

Tesla has revised the battery design of its Cybercab robotaxi to focus on repairs, maintenance and lower production costs. The company split 4680 battery cells into four separate modules, allowing faulty modules to be repaired or replaced without changing the whole pack. Executives also said the pack leaves room to potentially adopt lithium iron phosphate batteries in the future, though any switch from the current NMC chemistry and its timing are not decided.
