U.S. moves to standardise autonomous vehicle identification lights with teal external lighting

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is moving to introduce teal external lights to show when an autonomous vehicle is operating in self-driving mode. A draft proposal sets requirements for visibility from the front, sides and rear, with a minimum mounting height of 15 inches, but makes the lighting optional. The draft also includes changes to safety rules to reflect autonomous vehicle designs, including deleting a turn-signal requirement that is hard to apply to vehicles without steering wheels.

Tesla to handle over half of global passenger travel, Elon Musk says

Elon Musk set out an ambition for Tesla to take more than half of the global passenger travel market by leading with self-driving services. He said Tesla would handle the majority of passenger travel distance in countries that allow autonomous driving to operate freely. The outlook faces uncertainty from national regulations, delays in Tesla’s autonomous-driving schedule and scrutiny of its Cybercab robotaxi. Tesla executives also indicated unsupervised FSD could reach some customer cars as early as the second quarter of 2027.

Tesla to build in-house maps and navigation system to address FSD limits

Tesla is moving to build its own mapping as it seeks to fix key problems in its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. The company said it is developing an in-house maps and navigation framework to improve speed-limit recognition, parking and route selection. AI vice president Ashok Elluswamy said Tesla is building an AI map and navigation architecture based on data collected by its fleet and designed to learn driver preferences and respond to voice commands.
