Tesla holds bitcoin stake as impairment losses surge
Tesla kept its bitcoin holdings unchanged in the first quarter of 2026 but recorded a large impairment loss as prices fell. CoinDesk reported the company booked an after-tax impairment loss of $173 million on its digital asset holdings. The decline was driven more by bitcoin’s price drop than any change in the number of coins held. Tesla’s first-quarter revenue missed expectations, while earnings per share beat forecasts, lifting its shares about 4 percent in after-hours trade.
