LG Uplus Pyeongchon2 Center gets ISO 50001 certification, tests AI cooling technology

LG Uplus said on Tuesday its Pyeongchon2 Center has obtained ISO 50001 certification, an international standard for energy management systems. The internet data centre, completed in 2023, uses a high-efficiency cooling system that draws on cold outside air to manage server heat and cut energy use. The company is also testing next-generation cooling technologies such as direct-to-chip cooling for GPUs to improve cooling efficiency for AI data centres.

Microsoft unveils AI weather forecasting technology that can predict up to 6 weeks ahead

Microsoft has unveiled a new AI-based technique to improve the accuracy of weather forecasts 2 to 6 weeks ahead by correcting recurring errors in existing models. The machine-learning method, called probabilistic bias correction, can run on CPUs without high-performance GPUs and was released as open-source software. Researchers reported performance gains across precipitation, temperature and pressure metrics when applied to ECMWF models, and the approach is being tested in Kenya.

Taiwan Railway steps up push for low-carbon rail, from LEDs to new trains

Taiwan Railway Corp has for the first time measured companywide greenhouse gas emissions and aims to cut them 3 percent by 2028 from a 2025 baseline of 428,400 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. Train operations accounted for 75.1 percent of emissions. The company plans 11 reduction projects across six areas, including new energy-efficient trains, LED lighting and equipment upgrades. It is also building a cloud platform and pursuing 73 solar projects.
