LG CNS said on Sunday it has completed a 30-megawatt AI data centre in Jakarta, Indonesia. The company said it is the first case of a South Korean company directly building an overseas client's AI data centre on-site.
The project was ordered last year by KMG, a joint venture between Indonesia's Sinar Mas Group and Korea Investment Real Asset Management. LG CNS secured customers equivalent to the full capacity before the data centre was completed.
LG CNS designed the data centre to support high-performance computing based on next-generation graphics processing units. To handle high-heat AI servers, it adopted a hybrid cooling structure combining air cooling and liquid cooling.
The first phase uses an air-cooling system, and later phases will add a liquid-cooling system. It also built a power system capable of supplying more than 300 kilowatts per rack. LG CNS said that is about 60 times that of a typical data-centre rack, and it duplicated the power infrastructure so that backup power can be used even if the main power supply is cut off.
The project applied a combined solution called the 'One LG' integrated solution that brings together technologies from LG Group affiliates. It combined LG CNS's data-centre design, build and operate capabilities with LG Electronics' HVAC system and LG Energy Solution's battery technology to provide integrated power, cooling and energy infrastructure.
LG CNS is currently working on designs for later-phase construction. Once later phases are completed, total receiving capacity is expected to expand to 400 megawatts.
The company plans to expand its AI data-centre business across the Asia-Pacific region, including Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and Japan, based on this project record.
In South Korea, it is expanding its business areas beyond existing colocation and DBO businesses to include pre-fabricated modular data centres, GPU subscription services (GPUaaS) and liquid-cooling infrastructure. It also plans to pursue an AI factory business linked to AI platforms and services.
LG CNS CEO Hyun Shin-gyun (현신균) said, "The construction of the Indonesia AI data centre is an achievement that proves in the global market the data-centre capabilities accumulated in South Korea." He added, "With this as a bridgehead, we will expand AI data-centre and AI factory businesses in global markets, including the Asia-Pacific."
