MSIT steps up work on 2045 science and technology frontier strategy

South Korea is drawing up a long-term strategy aimed at establishing technology sovereignty and advancing to become a leading science and technology power by 2045, the 100th anniversary of Korea’s liberation. The Ministry of Science and ICT held a second steering committee meeting on July 31 to review a draft 2045 vision and ways to boost public acceptance. The ministry plans a nationwide survey through Aug. 21 and workshops to hear youth views, and will assess social acceptance using about 1,000 AI-based virtual personas.

Financial firms join crypto exchanges, could shake up digital asset market

South Korea\'s won-based digital asset exchanges are bringing in financial companies as new shareholders to bolster their business foundations, drawing attention to whether the market led by Upbit and Bithumb could shift. CoinGecko data put Upbit’s 24-hour volume share at 72.1 percent and Bithumb’s at 22.3 percent. Trading activity has declined, while Coinone, Korbit and Gopax move to expand capital and business ties with financial groups.

Gopax appoints former AWS Korea executive Kim Na-young as CEO

Digital asset exchange Gopax has appointed Kim Na-young, former head of financial business development at Amazon Web Services Korea, as its new chief executive. The company plans to speed up efforts to resolve long-unsettled unpaid GoFi customer funds, normalise management and prepare to renew its virtual asset service provider registration. Operator Streami announced the appointment on July 27, and said major shareholder Binance will support the turnaround work.
