MSIT steps up work on 2045 science and technology frontier strategy

South Korea is drawing up a long-term strategy aimed at establishing technology sovereignty and advancing to become a leading science and technology power by 2045, the 100th anniversary of Korea’s liberation. The Ministry of Science and ICT held a second steering committee meeting on July 31 to review a draft 2045 vision and ways to boost public acceptance. The ministry plans a nationwide survey through Aug. 21 and workshops to hear youth views, and will assess social acceptance using about 1,000 AI-based virtual personas.

KAIST develops tech to cut sensory confusion and hallucinations in multimodal AI

Researchers in South Korea have developed techniques to reduce cases in which AI confuses multiple sensory inputs or generates nonexistent information. KAIST said a team led by professor Yong-man Ro developed two methods to improve sensor understanding in multimodal large language models and reduce confusion between visual and audio data. The approaches are designed to work with less data or be applied without retraining. KAIST said the technology could be used in autonomous driving, rescue robots, drones and medical AI.

DGIST holding firm forms first 2 billion won fund to support deep tech startups

Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST) holding company DGIST Technology Holding formed its first investment fund of about 2 billion won and will invest in early-stage deep tech firms and campus startups. DGIST said the holding firm began investment activity after holding a general meeting to form the fund. The fund will focus on national strategic technology areas such as AI, robotics, advanced semiconductors and bio-healthcare.
