Tesla stays silent on HW3 upgrade question as unsupervised FSD row resurfaces
Tesla reignited controversy by not answering a key question from owners of vehicles with its older HW3 self-driving hardware during its 2026 third-quarter earnings call. While the company laid out a schedule for introducing unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) in customer vehicles, it offered no details on computer upgrades or compensation for existing HW3 cars. Tesla to build in-house maps and navigation system to address FSD limits
Tesla is moving to build its own mapping as it seeks to fix key problems in its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. The company said it is developing an in-house maps and navigation framework to improve speed-limit recognition, parking and route selection. AI vice president Ashok Elluswamy said Tesla is building an AI map and navigation architecture based on data collected by its fleet and designed to learn driver preferences and respond to voice commands.

Tesla Cybercab deliveries seen by end-2026, robotaxi priority over private sales
Tesla plans to begin delivering its autonomous-only Cybercab to individual customers by the end of 2026, but most early production is expected to be allocated to Tesla’s own robotaxi service. The plan was outlined during a third-quarter earnings conference call. Tesla executives said current production from a Texas line is going into the internal robotaxi fleet. The company is operating a paid ride service in Austin and plans to expand to Dallas.
