SMRs emerge as 24-7 power option for semiconductor fabs

Small modular reactors (SMRs) are emerging as a power alternative for semiconductor clusters as electricity demand rises with new fabs while the government reduces coal and LNG generation. Industry is reviewing building SMRs near chip plants because they can provide steady 24-hour output. AI data centre grid code to be introduced this year; Cho Kyung-tae says exemptions needed for existing projects

South Korea is pushing to introduce a dedicated grid code for AI data centres by year-end, but a ruling party lawmaker said existing data centre projects should be exempt. Cho Kyung-tae urged the Ministry of Science and ICT to minimise regulatory application to ongoing projects, warning that new technical standards could raise costs and delay completion. He also said added equipment could reduce server capacity and called for inter-ministry coordination.

October Korea Engineer Award goes to Aldeba CEO Kim Jin-oh and Samsung Heavy Industries\' Lee Tae-goo

South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Industrial Technology Association (KOITA) selected Aldeba CEO Kim Jin-oh and Samsung Heavy Industries professional Lee Tae-goo as winners of the October 2026 Korea Engineer Award. Kim was recognised for developing artificial organs and surgery simulators for medical training using natural biomaterials and 3D printing. Lee was cited for improving ship propeller efficiency while reducing vibration and noise.
