Oh Taeseok says biggest bottleneck for LEO satellite network is launch vehicles

South Korea is pushing to build an independent low-Earth-orbit satellite communications network by 2035, but domestic launch vehicles may not be able to put all required satellites into orbit. Korea Aerospace Administration chief Oh Taeseok said the biggest bottleneck is launch capacity and that Nuri and the next-generation launcher cannot deploy the initial satellites. Lawmakers raised concerns about delays if the country relies on foreign launchers and urged standard guidelines for overseas launch contracts.

Korea space agency to cut launch costs with reusable rocket, push mass satellite production

The Korea Aerospace Administration plans to raise the reliability of Korea’s homegrown launch vehicle from about 80 percent to more than 90 percent through repeated Nuri launches. Administrator Tae-seok Oh (오태석) told a parliamentary audit the agency will shift its focus from R&D to industrial promotion and build a private-led space ecosystem. It also plans reusable rockets to cut costs, support small and mid-sized launchers, and expand satellite mass production and lunar missions.

All 9 secondary payload satellites on Nuri flight 5 establish contact

South Korea\'s Korea AeroSpace Administration and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute said all 9 secondary payload satellites deployed from the Nuri launch vehicle\'s fifth flight have established communications with ground stations. The rocket lifted off on Oct. 7 at 12:25 p.m. Of 10 secondary payload satellites onboard, 9 were deployed normally, while one, Quaternion PerSat-2, was not released. Six satellites achieved two-way links and three achieved downlink only.
