U.S. OCC finalises GENIUS Act rule; Bessent calls it a historic moment

The U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency has finalised a rule covering reserves and redemption standards for payment stablecoins and some custody activities, with an effective date of Jan. 18, 2027. The rule details a federal oversight framework under the GENIUS Act enacted in 2025. It applies to certain banks and other eligible issuers, while maintaining a ban on paying interest to holders.

U.S. to overhaul car headlight rules to reflect new anti-glare technology

The U.S. government is starting a full overhaul of vehicle headlight rules to align them with the 2026 environment. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration plans to begin a consultative rulemaking process to rewrite FMVSS 108, the federal lighting standard. The agency aims to address long-criticised delays that have limited adoption of newer safety lighting technologies. It also plans to incorporate technologies such as LED systems, sensors and automatic high beams, while strengthening standards to reduce glare for other drivers.
