Kakao holds Kanana Scholar Colloquium with leading universities to discuss advancing AI

Kakao is strengthening industry-academia cooperation to advance its services by sharing the latest artificial intelligence technologies and research results with researchers from major South Korean universities. The company said it held the academic exchange program Kanana Scholar Colloquium on May 22 at its AI Campus in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. Kakao introduced in-house model advancement research and discussed cooperation opportunities across key areas including foundation models, agentic AI, multimodal models and AI safety.

MSIT launches NEST deep tech commercialisation council

South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT said on May 21 it will hold a launch ceremony in Seoul for NEST, a council aimed at supporting deep tech commercialisation. The body is designed to promote deep tech startups and growth by building cooperation among organisations that use public research results from universities and state-funded institutes. It includes 13 organisations: three newly selected comprehensive specialised companies and 10 company builders.

PIPC discusses privacy policy direction suited to the AI era

South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission held the second plenary meeting of the 2026 Personal Information Future Forum on May 20 and discussed “redesigning the definition of personal information in the AI era.” Speakers addressed the direction humanity should take in the AI era and practical and legal issues around accountability and transparency for lawful handling of personal information. Forum members said the current protection system should be reviewed and continued in-depth talks on policies suited to the AI era.
