South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT reviewed changes in the platform industry environment stemming from the spread of AI and discussed future policy direction.

The ministry held a strategic task forum on Sept. 22 at Post Tower in Seoul's Myeongdong with the Digital Platform Policy Forum, the Korea Internet Corporations Association and the Korea Information and Communications Law Association to strengthen competitiveness in the platform industry.

The forum assessed changes in the platform environment driven by advances in AI and sought a direction for South Korea's digital platform policy. Kyung-sun Lee (이경선), a researcher at the Korea Information Society Development Institute, presented on "the value of platforms in the AI era and policy direction". Ji-won Sun (선지원), a professor at Hanyang University, stressed the need to shift the platform regulation paradigm in a presentation on "regulatory issues in the platform industry and ways to improve".

A panel discussion that followed brought together people from academia, the legal community, industry and the government to discuss ways to strengthen platforms' global competitiveness and build a sustainable ecosystem. The ministry plans to reflect the views raised on the day in future policy and support efforts to secure global competitiveness for domestic platforms.

Ryu Je-myung (류제명), second vice minister at the ministry, said, "At the center of the huge transitional period of AI advancement, it is important to find a balance between innovation in platform policy and social responsibility." He added, "We will communicate closely with ecosystem members and pursue policies in which platform innovation and market fairness are in harmony."
