Automakers make money selling vehicle data as U.S. car privacy row spreads
A growing privacy debate in the United States is focusing on who should control location and driving-habit data collected by cars, after it emerged that such data was used in setting insurance rates. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission in January issued a final order barring General Motors and OnStar for five years from providing consumer location and driving-behavior data to consumer reporting agencies. Scrutiny is also widening to other automakers as lawmakers weigh new measures.

With the Nov. 3 U.S. midterm election approaching, Korean battery makers face renewed political bargaining over tax credits. EV purchase subsidies have already been abolished, while the advanced manufacturing production credit, or AMPC, has been defended at a 25 percent credit through 2032. Companies with large North American bases are reshaping operations to withstand policy shifts, including moving from joint ventures to wholly owned plants and shifting production toward energy storage systems.

BMW Group kept the top spot among established automaker groups and alliances selling internal combustion models in the United States by battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales share, with BEVs accounting for 6 percent of its U.S. sales in the second quarter. General Motors raised its BEV share to 5 percent from 3.6 percent and moved up to second, overtaking Hyundai Motor Group. Hyundai Motor Group’s BEV share rose to 4.5 percent, but it slipped to third.
