Bill proposes youth \'shutdown\' feature for generative AI, letting parents set usage time

A South Korean lawmaker plans to introduce a bill that would require operators of generative AI-based interactive services to provide tools to restrict usage time for minors. Under the proposal, minors or their legal representatives could request limits on usage duration and time slots. Providers would also have to verify users’ age and identity and display warnings and usage history. Companies that fail to comply could face fines of up to 30 million won.

Scatter Lab\'s Zeta launches visual novel mode, AI generates characters and backgrounds in real time

Scatter Lab launched a new play option called \"visual novel mode\" for its AI character chat service Zeta, it said on Sept. 28. The feature changes a character\'s expressions and actions and the background in real time based on conversations with users, and includes game elements such as choices and dice events. It can generate images for new characters and lets users create settings, outfits and intros, with outfits available for sale to others.

Generative AI services near 1 trillion won in payments, raising user protection and operator liability issues

South Korea\'s generative AI services market is expanding rapidly, with business-to-consumer payments expected to exceed 1 trillion won this year. Estimated payments for major services totalled 962.3 billion won in January to August, led by Anthropic and OpenAI. As usage grows, authorities are tightening rules on privacy, operator duties under the AI Basic Act and user protection. Cases of inadequate responses to privacy inquiries have already been identified.
