Naver Webtoon launches byUs AI story chat based on webtoon IP

Naver Webtoon has launched an AI-based interactive service that lets readers create stories using the company’s webtoon intellectual property. The service, called byUs, allows users to talk with characters based on creator-approved webtoon IP to develop new narratives. It offers two formats: original stories built on the source world and character settings, and fan stories that add new situations and relationships. Features include suggested replies, autoplay, snapshots and special cuts.

Webtoon Entertainment Q1 operating loss 11.7 billion won, narrows 69.8 percent

Webtoon Entertainment, Naver Webtoon’s U.S. parent, said its first-quarter operating loss narrowed 69.8 percent from a year earlier on improved gross profit and cost controls. Revenue fell 1.5 percent to $320.87 million, but rose 0.2 percent on a constant-currency basis. The operating loss was $8.03 million and net loss fell 60 percent to $8.80 million. Paid content revenue edged up, while ad and IP business revenue declined.

AI companion app revenue up 30 percent, Zeta tops growth ranking

AI companion apps, a segment of generative AI focused on emotional interaction with characters, are growing fastest as Korean apps gain ground in global revenue rankings. Sensor Tower said worldwide in-app purchase revenue for AI companion apps rose about 30 percent in the first quarter of 2026 from the previous quarter, the highest growth among generative AI subcategories. Scatter Lab’s Zeta ranked first by revenue growth, while Uif and Melting also placed in the top 10.
