Naver Webtoon has unveiled an artificial intelligence-based interactive service that lets readers create stories using its intellectual property.

On Tuesday, Naver Webtoon officially launched its AI story chat service, byUs, which lets users talk with characters and develop new narratives based on creator-approved webtoon IP. The service is available through the More menu in the Naver Webtoon app.

The company said byUs offers two types of content experiences, original stories and fan stories, based on webtoon IP.

Original stories start with an introduction built on the source work’s world and character settings, and let users develop the narrative through conversation. Fan stories let users enjoy creative stories by setting new situations and relationships for original characters. It also supports a user-generated content tool that anyone can use to create and share content.

The service also includes features such as suggested replies to help keep conversations flowing, autoplay, snapshots that provide situation-appropriate images, and special cuts offered according to affinity levels.

Naver Webtoon plans to gradually expand its IP lineup, focusing on works with strong fandoms, starting with the webtoon "Ijiklog". The company has operated "Character Chat" since 2024, allowing users to have everyday conversations with characters, and has seen increased consumption of original works.

Shin-hyung Kim (김신형), head of IP business at Naver Webtoon, said webtoons are moving beyond content that people watch, and into an interactive space where fans participate in and expand the world. He said the company will use byUs to help users discover the appeal of original works in new ways and build a virtuous cycle that leads to deeper attachment to IP and a strengthened lifecycle.
