Trump deems foreign-made robots, industrial machinery a national security threat, alarming U.S. manufacturers

U.S. President Donald Trump has labeled imports of foreign-made industrial robots a national security threat and ordered negotiations with trade partners to adjust imports. A proclamation said the United States could impose additional steps including tariffs, quotas and fees if no agreement is reached. EU pushes direct Greenland subsea cable with Canada, South Korea and Japan link plan

The European Union has formalised plans to build its first subsea internet cable directly linking Europe and Greenland. In a new Arctic strategy document, the EU said it would support a sovereign, secure and resilient connection. The Pan-Arctic Cable could later extend via Canada to Asia, including a possible link to Japan and South Korea, without passing through the United States. The EU has already committed $119 million, or 107 million euros, to strengthen Greenland’s secure connectivity.

Southern Ocean waters near Antarctica are getting saltier, study finds

Waters in the deep Southern Ocean are becoming saltier as sea ice around Antarctica shrinks sharply, a study has found, raising concerns about knock-on effects on global ocean circulation and climate. Researchers analysed six observational datasets from 2004 to 2024, including Argo floats. They found salinity and density in Antarctic Intermediate Water at about 700 to 1,200 metres have risen since 2016, reversing decades of freshening.
