Government, three carriers step up next-generation network investment push, revamp regulation

South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT and the country\'s three mobile carriers discussed expanding investment in next-generation networks for the AI era and reviewed preparations for commercialising 5G standalone mode (SA) by year-end. The talks focused on ways to raise declining capital expenditure and on investment directions for AI-RAN and 6G. They also covered regulatory rationalisation, budget and tax support, network transition plans and revisions to net neutrality guidelines and telecom quality assessments.

3G set to fade as SKT halts new sign-ups and KT prepares to follow

South Korea’s 3G mobile service is entering an exit phase after SK Telecom halted new sign-ups and KT began preparing to do the same. The move blocks new users but does not shut down the 3G network, which will continue operating for existing subscribers. A full shutdown requires carriers to submit user-protection plans to the Ministry of Science and ICT and receive approval. 3G phone lines stand at 328,124, about 0.6 percent of total.

SKT to start steps to end 3G service after 23 years, halts new sign-ups

SK Telecom will begin preliminary steps to end its 3G service, halting new sign-ups and supporting existing users to switch to LTE or 5G. From Aug. 20 it will stop new subscriptions, number transfers and device changes for 3G handsets and LTE devices that do not support HD Voice. It plans to seek government approval and proceed gradually. Support options include free device swaps, bill discounts, purchase subsidies and termination support.
