[Digital Today reporter Jin-ho Lee] SK Telecom is starting preliminary procedures to end its 3G service. It will halt new 3G sign-ups and support existing users switching to LTE or 5G.

SKT will, from Aug. 20, stop new subscriptions, number transfers and device changes for 3G handsets and LTE handsets that do not support HD Voice, as it pursues a gradual shutdown of its 3G service.

SKT started its 3G service in 2003. It decided to end the service as 3G subscribers and traffic have continued to decline, devices and equipment have aged, and the telecommunications environment has shifted to next-generation networks such as LTE and 5G. SKT plans to apply to the Ministry of Science and ICT for approval to end its 3G service and then proceed with a gradual shutdown process.

It will run a service transition support programme for existing users of 3G handsets and LTE handsets that do not support HD Voice. Even if eligible customers switch to LTE or 5G, their existing bundle discounts and long-term customer benefits will remain in place.

Depending on their choice, customers switching can replace their device for free with 1 of 3 designated LTE or 5G models and receive a monthly bill discount of up to 12,000 won for 24 months. They can also choose a handset purchase subsidy of up to 380,000 won plus a monthly bill discount of up to 12,000 won for 24 months.

They can also choose a discount of up to 70 percent of the monthly plan fee for 24 months, up to a total of 700,000 won. Regardless of programme type, lines that complete a device replacement will receive 4 additional refill coupons.

When 3G subscribers aged 65 and older switch to LTE or 5G, SKT will support them so they can subscribe to the existing New Silver plan. The monthly fee is 9,900 won, and they can continue using it if they do not switch to another plan after signing up.

Customers who cancel service or move to another mobile carrier without receiving transition support will be given a termination support payment of 40,000 won. It will also waive penalty fees incurred during the service transition, cancellation or move to another carrier.

SKT plans to inform 3G users of the shutdown plan and support programme through text messages, the T World website and app, and billing notices sent by post and email. It will also provide separate guidance for customers who have difficulty using digital services, including older people.

Applications for service transition can be made at T World stores nationwide, through the SKT customer centre and at its official online mall, the T Direct Shop.

Yoon Jae-woong (윤재웅), head of SKT's Product & Brand Division, said, "We will support the transition while carefully looking after the circumstances of customers who have used 3G for a long time." He added, "We will strengthen network quality and service competitiveness so that all customers can enjoy more stable and convenient telecommunications services."
