AI Basic Act amendment passes parliament, creating legal basis for AI institute

South Korea's parliament on Dec. 30 passed amendments to the AI Basic Act to create a legal basis for establishing and operating an AI institute and to strengthen the National AI Strategy Committee's role. The package seeks to spur AI innovation by generating public-sector demand, supporting AI startups and professional talent, and providing standards for using public data as training data. It also aims to improve access for vulnerable groups and provide cost support for low-income users.

SoftBank to buy AI infrastructure investor DigitalBridge for $4.04 billion

SoftBank will acquire DigitalBridge Group for $4.04 billion as part of its push to expand AI infrastructure, SiliconANGLE reported on Dec. 29. DigitalBridge, listed on the New York Stock Exchange, manages $108 billion in assets and owns Vantage Data Centers and edge data centre operator AtlasEdge. SoftBank plans to strengthen its AI data centre ecosystem and secure DigitalBridge's infrastructure lending and venture capital operations. The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2026.
