Korea Investment Securities raises 2026 KOSPI target to 5,650 from 4,600

Korea Investment Securities raised its 2026 target for the KOSPI to 5,650 from 4,600 as corporate profits surge, led by semiconductors. Researcher Kim Dae-jun said the 12-month forward EPS stood at 435 points as of Jan. 6, up 28.8 percent from an October 2025 forecast, and he applied that change to the new estimate. He used a PER of 13 and set a floor at 4,100.

KOSPI breaks above 4,600 for first time, extends record run

South Korea’s KOSPI broke above 4,600 for the first time on Wednesday, extending a run of record highs. The benchmark opened at 4,566.34 and quickly moved past 4,600. At 9:10 a.m., it was up 80.27 points, or 1.77 percent, at 4,605.75. Foreigners were net buyers, while individuals and institutions were net sellers. All top 10 market-cap stocks were higher.

National AI Strategy panel holds seminar on AI-based tailored welfare

South Korea's National AI Strategy Committee discussed legal and institutional measures to use AI to provide welfare benefits tailored to individuals. The committee held a seminar on Jan. 6 to reflect related tasks in a draft national AI action plan. Participants examined the need to improve the application-based principle under the Framework Act on Social Security, expand automatic payments in universal benefits and increase AI use in selective benefits, while considering privacy, administrative accountability and feasibility.
