KOSPI breaks 5,000 for first time, sets new record

South Korea's KOSPI index crossed the 5,000 mark for the first time on Jan. 22, rising 92.21 points, or 1.88 percent, to 5,002.14 at 9:01 a.m., the Korea Exchange said. The benchmark began at 100 in January 1980. The government plans tax incentives and a new Returning to the Domestic Market Account to encourage investors who moved into overseas stocks to return.

Trump cites NATO Greenland framework, rules out force and drops tariffs

U.S. President Donald Trump said a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte produced a framework for a future deal on Greenland and much of the Arctic. He said the outcome would benefit the United States and all NATO members and that he would not impose tariffs planned for Feb. 1. Trump said talks could be handled by Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and others, and cited further discussions on Golden Dome and mineral rights.

SK Broadband pilots 'watch-and-talk' AI customer service

SK Broadband said on Thursday it is piloting a “watch-and-talk” AI customer service that responds to spoken inquiries while displaying required information on a smartphone screen in real time. The service adopts a multimodal approach, unlike voice-only AI callbots. Customers can handle about 200 common tasks, including bill checks and fault diagnosis, without a human agent, 24 hours a day. The pilot targets some customers, with phased expansion planned.
