Korea commission steps up response to false manipulated information, boosts platform accountability
South Korea\'s Broadcasting Media and Communications Commission plans to upgrade its response system to false and manipulated information under a revised information network law. It will push to strengthen accountability for large platforms and seek to set up a transparency centre to support fact-checking. The commission also plans to introduce labelling for online AI-generated content and raise transparency around recommendation algorithms. It is reviewing measures to regulate youth SNS use and preparing pay-TV regulatory changes and other media policy steps.

Bamishimwi revamps dispute mediation panel to nine members to address amended Information Network Act
South Korea’s Broadcasting Media and Communications Review Committee said it will expand its defamation dispute mediation body into a nine-member panel that will also mediate disputes linked to major platforms’ measures on illegal and manipulated information. The move follows an amended Information Network Act that took effect on Tuesday. The amendment allows platforms to take steps such as deletion or access limits after reports, and lets reporters and posters seek mediation. Rules on requesting user information for privacy or defamation claims were also eased.

South Korea\'s Broadcast Media Communications Standards Commission plans a broad response to online discriminatory and hate speech, including stronger monitoring and reviews, encouragement of self-regulation by internet platform operators, and expanded media ethics education for youths. An amended Information and Communications Network Act taking effect on July 7 defines as illegal information content that incites violence or discrimination or seriously fuels hatred on specified grounds. The commission said it will act quickly on such content.
