AMD \'Gainsborough\' chip appears as possible Steam Deck 2 candidate

AMD’s unannounced chip codenamed “Gainsborough” is being discussed as a possible processor for Valve’s next handheld game device, the Steam Deck 2, after the name appeared in AMD drivers. As rivals move to higher resolutions and refresh rates, the Steam Deck 2 is expected to support at least 1080p and 120Hz. It should also improve power efficiency, maintain sub-$1,000 pricing for key models, adopt more durable sticks and expand battery capacity.

The company is keeping its principle of releasing a new model only when a generational leap is possible, including better battery life and power efficiency rather than a simple performance boost. Designer Pierre-Loup Griffais said Valve is reviewing when and how it can offer such a product and is not rushing release until suitable hardware arrives.
